Getting their day in court.
For the deaf, says Denise Hummel, ADA is a sign of the times.
Denise Hummel glimpsed her future work while she was an undergraduate. “I watched a deaf person struggle with sign language and mime,” she says. “And I realized I understood what she was trying to communicate. I intervened and succeeded.”
Today, five years after earning her law degree from American University in Washington, D.C., she continues to intercede for deaf and disabled individuals. Hummel, 30, filed the first class action lawsuit under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on January 27—the day after the first phase of the act took effect.
