DENISE PIRROTTI HUMMEL, J.D. DIRECTOR

INTERNATIONAL PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • Fifteen years of experience in a private law practice, which included specializing in litigation, mediation, and cross-cultural diversity training related to employment issues, with a particular emphasis on international contract, disability, gender, race and age issues.

  • Working as the Manager of International Client Relations with a renowned advertising firm in Milan, Italy, managing relations and disputes throughout Europe.

  • Practicing as a labor-relations attorney representing the Overseas Education Association during negotiations, mediations, and hearings with the United States Department of Defense Schools in various military installations in Europe, Iceland, Bermuda and Cuba, utilizing both United States federal law and military regulations.

  • Analyzing constitutional issues of equal-employment opportunity legislation and preparing congressional witnesses for civil rights hearings before the Congress of the United States, U.S. House of Representatives; authored draft committee report to accompany House Resolution #229 pertaining to a contested election in the House as well as researching, across nations, the ways in which contested elections are managed.

  • Speaking and collaborating with ministers to governments from Asia, the Middle East, and Europe at the International Institute of Peace Through Tourism Global Summit in Thailand.

  • U.S. Department of State International Visitor Program: Mauritania, Morocco, Democratic Republic of Congo, Turkmenistan, Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia.

  • Serving on the Board of Directors of the Citizen’s Diplomacy Council of San Diego, an organization that in cooperation with the U.S. Department of State, Library of Congress, USAID, Fulbright Exchange Programs, brings over 600 emerging leaders from mor than 145 countries to San Diego each year.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION EXPERIENCE

  • Accepted to the U.S. State Department Speaker and Specialist Program where she will train utilizing the Model she has developed wherein she adapted the Western Facilitative Mediation Model to meet the needs of Non-Western Cultures. This model has already been taught to representatives of Benin, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Rwanda and Togo.

  • Trained mediators at both the San Diego Bar Association and the National Conflict Resolution Center on subject-matter related to the impact of culture on conflict resolution.

  • Mediating hundreds of cases under the Civil Rights Act, the Americans With Disabilities Act, and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act since 1993.

  • Chosen as one of the top twenty young attorneys by the American Bar Association in 1992, in part for her ability to negotiate to conclusion the first class-action suit brought under the Americans With Disabilities Act.

  • Serving as an employment law mediator with the National Conflict Resolution Center a San Diego organization which is a full service alternative dispute-resolution provider operating as a private, non profit corporation in San Diego, California. Established in 1983 as the San Diego Mediation Center, NCRC is recognized nationwide as a pioneer in expanding a traditional community mediation program into a broad-based provider of ADR services.

  • Writing extensive training materials regarding workplace and management issues, particularly with regard to liability prevention and mediation for the American Bar Association.

  • Mediating cases across multiple cultures on three continents.

  • Mediation Training Certificate, CDR, Boulder, Colorado (1993), recertification through the National Center for Conflict Resolution (NCRC), San Diego, California (2008) and multiple follow-up courses and workshops in specific disciplines

  • Trainer, Boulder County Mediation Steering Committee; Mediator.

  • University Professor and public speaker: ADR, Leadership, Cultural Essentials of Negotiation (Boulder and San Diego).
